At least 7 killed in suicide attack in northwestern Pakistan

Islamabad, Feb 15 .- At least seven people, including three policemen and two civilians, were killed in a suicide attack on government offices in the tribal region of Mohmand, in northwestern Pakistan, a military source said Wednesday.

The attack occurred early Wednesday, when two suicide attackers tried to enter the premises of the central government offices in the Ghalani area, the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement.

One of the attackers was shot down by the security forces, while the second attacker managed to detonate the bombs he was carrying, killing three policemen and two civilians.

Mohmand is one of the seven tribal areas in northwestern Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan, and over which the authorities have no control, making it a haven for members of the al-Qaeda, and Afghan and Pakistani extremist outfits.

The latest attack comes two days after a suicide attack in the city of Lahore (east) during a demonstration, that killed 14 people and wounded 94.

Pakistan launched a nationwide counter-terror operation in June 2014 focusing particularly in remote tribal areas along the Afghanistan border, a hotbed of extremist activities.

The operation has so far killed some 3,500 suspected terrorists, according to government figures. EFE
